Plant Propagation Guide — Free Plants from Cuttings

One plant can become dozens. Here’s how to multiply your collection for free.

💧 Water Propagation (Easiest Method)

Best for: Pothos, Philodendron, Monstera, Tradescantia, Spider Plant babies

  1. Cut a stem below a node (the bump where leaves grow)
  2. Remove leaves below the node
  3. Place in a jar of water (node submerged)
  4. Change water every 3-5 days
  5. Wait for roots to grow 2-3 inches (2-4 weeks)
  6. Plant in soil and keep moist for first week

🌱 Soil Propagation

Best for: Succulents, Snake Plant, ZZ Plant, Spider Plant babies

  1. Take a cutting or leaf
  2. Let it callous for 1-2 days (prevents rot)
  3. Plant in slightly moist soil
  4. Keep in bright indirect light
  5. Water sparingly until roots establish

✂️ Division

Best for: Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Spider Plant, Ferns

  1. Remove plant from pot
  2. Gently separate the root ball into sections
  3. Each section should have roots and leaves
  4. Plant each section in its own pot
  5. Water well and keep in shade for a few days

  • Pothos: Water propagation, roots in 1-2 weeks
  • Monstera: Water propagation with aerial root, 3-4 weeks
  • Snake Plant: Leaf cuttings in soil, 4-8 weeks
  • Spider Plant: Babies in water or soil, 1-2 weeks
  • Succulents: Leaf on dry soil, 2-4 weeks
  • ZZ Plant: Leaf or stem in soil, 8-12 weeks (patience!)

🔧 Troubleshooting

  • Rotting in water? Change water more often, use clean jar
  • No roots after weeks? Check for node, try rooting hormone
  • Cutting dying? Too much direct light, move to indirect
